Course description

Getting the right expert witness/advisor in construction-related cases is always difficult as the spectrum of involved professionals and their specialized expertise is wide. This CPD course presents the nature of each key profession and why the specialized expertise between individual practitioners of the same profession can differ. On completing the course, you should have an idea on how to identify and verify whether a candidate is suitable to be appointed as the expert witness or advisor to your case.

Speaker's biography 

Ir Dr Fok is a veteran civil engineer and project manager, knowledgeable in dispute resolution, as well as an expert in training of construction-related professionals.

He involved heavily in the planning, design, assessment and management of several mega-size infrastructure and building projects in Hong Kong, China and Singapore during his 40+year career in the civil/structural engineering profession. In the past decade, he has also been studying the issues and solutions of industry/government systems and practices. He is currently a Civil Engineering Specialist of the HKCAAVQ (Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications.

He is also active in dispute resolution. Apart from handling matters related to arbitration and mediation, he involved heavily in the promotion of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods. He acted the leading role of mediator in an one-hour video for the education of law school students of the City University of Hong Kong. As a Fellow of the Cheung Kong Centre for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution (2006-2010), he trained selected law school students of Shantou University to enable them to get accredited as panel mediators of the HKIAC as well as to prepare them for the International Mediation Moot held in Paris organized by the International Chamber of Commerce. He judged at various international moot competitions, including the Vis Moot (East) for International Commercial Arbitration and the ADR International Mooting Competition jointly organised by China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the law schools of Columbia University and CityU. He was an accredited general mediator of HKMAAL.

He spends substantial time at universities teaching, supervising researches, designing and running of courses. He brings industry knowledge to universities and promotes new research findings to practical industry applications. He has been an Adjunct Professor of the City University of Hong Kong for over 16 years and is an Honorary Fellow of the Lingnan University.
